Earlier today Bungie finally announced Destiny 2 for the Playstation 4, Xbox One and, most interestingly, the PC.
Bungie’s description of the game is as follows:
Humanity’s last safe city has fallen to an overwhelming invasion force, led by Ghaul, the imposing commander of the brutal Red Legion. He has stripped the city’s Guardians of their power, and forced the survivors to flee. You will venture to mysterious, unexplored worlds of our solar system to discover an arsenal of weapons and devastating new combat abilities. To defeat the Red Legion and confront Ghaul, you must reunite humanity’s scattered heroes, stand together, and fight back to reclaim our home.
What makes this announcement mildly interesting is that the previous game was a console exclusive, so I wonder what has changed since then for Bungie to develop for that platform. Plus, this is Bungie’s first ever game developed originally for the PC. Yes Halo and Halo 2 came to the PC but they were ports, as was Marathon, so I feel that they don’t count. Also, if you read into what Bungie is implying about the game, it sounds like they are making a clean break from the previous entry. Something which surprises me since the original pitch was for a multi-game franchise with characters that come from one game to another, kind of like Mass Effect. Unlike that game, however, Destiny is all about the phat l00t and building your character and not about the choices you made in the story, so one could see a large amount of the player-base being pretty pissed about this announcement.
The first game was met with pretty lukewarm reactions from everyone and will probably be regarded as a pretty massive disappointment. It will be interesting to see if Bungie can make the sequel a game that is actually fun to play for normal people and not the crazy people who just want to see the numbers get bigger and purple coloured weapon names.
As a postscript, I have to say that the box art is absolute trash.
