Yesterday Sony had a conference, The Playstation Experience, which they used to outline what games they have in development (among other things).
Several things were shown, Marvel vs Capcom 4, Windjammers and a remastering of Crash Bandicoot, but for me the craziest thing they announced was The Last of Us: Part II – the sequel to The Last of Us.
Now many will feel like a sequel to that game was a full gone conclusion. It sold a boat-load and was a critical darling, but there was something about Naughty Dog and Neil Druckman’s (developer and director/writer, respectively) treatment of the game that just made me feel like this game was a “one and done.” But maybe Sony was willing to give them so much damn money they had a change of heart. I am being a bit cynical though, it is totally possible that they just thought up a compelling narrative that follows on from the first game.
So what do we know? Well it is running on Uncharted 4‘s engine, so it is going to look incredible, and the main characters from The Last of Us are returning but now Ellie is older, possibly in her late teens, and that you will be playing as her. Everything else is a mystery.
I really hope Naughty Dog don’t balls this up, The Last of Us was one of the best games I have ever played and I would hate to see a middling or straight up needless sequel kind of spoil the world and the characters that they made.
