Cross-Console Multiplayer now exists?!?!

The first game to theoretically become cross-console compatible!

The first game to theoretically become cross-console compatible!

So today Chris Charla – the director of ID @ Xbox which I believe is basically one part of the games department at Microsoft – announced in a letter posted on the Xbox news website that cross-console gaming is going to be possible thanks to the work his team are doing to the infrastructure of Xbox Live and the Xbox One itself.

To quote:

“First, in addition to natively supporting cross-platform play between Xbox One and Windows 10 games that use Xbox Live, we’re enabling developers to support cross-network play as well. This means players on Xbox One and Windows 10 using Xbox Live will be able to play with players on different online multiplayer networks – including other console and PC networks.

Of course, it’s up to game developers to support this feature, and Xbox Live players will always have the option of choosing to play only with other Xbox Live players. We’re thrilled to confirm that Psyonix’s Rocket League will be one of the first games to take advantage of this new capability by enabling cross-network play between Xbox One and PC players, with an open invitation for other networks to participate as well.”

Which, if it wasn’t clear enough, means that when you play multiplayer games you can (theoretically speaking) play with other people on other consoles and the PC. Of course this will be up to the developers and Sony to make this happen, but it is a pretty exciting prospect! Now the term “console wars” can become a, virtual, reality by forming clans comprised solely of one console or another and going around wiping out the other, or whatever.

I wonder if Sony will be down for this to be honest. Despite the similarities beneath case, both companies and their consoles have their own identity that they are keen to keep hold of plus a boat load of hubris that comes with that. Also, I can see PC users having the upper hand, just like how you could play Quake Arena on the Dreamcast against PC users and vice versa, because the mouse and keyboard is way better for first person shooters. I hope this takes off though because it will breath new life into games if/when they become deserted as both communities can come together and keep playing.
