ORIGINALLY slated for a 2015 release, the latest adventure in the career of loveable scallywag Jack Sparrow is finally back on the table. ScreenRant.com reports that the film, supposedly shelved due to financial concerns following Disney’s losses from the flop of 2013’s Lone Ranger, another star-vehicle for the perennially popular Johnny Depp, is now scheduled for a Summer 2017 release.
Despite the not-so-slow fall from grace of the franchise following the critical and commercial success of 2003’s Curse of the Black Pearl and the mixed reception of its sequels, the franchise is still a fantastic money spinner for the Walt Disney Company. In an industry perhaps suffering under a creative drought, the continuation of such a lucrative franchise was an inevitability. Still, fans will be happy to see the film set in stone (or as close as you can get with the tumultuous film industry), and the film will undoubtedly get the audience it is looking for; all that remains to be seen is whether it can recapture the charm and magic of the earlier films or continue the downward trend of its sequels.
